Being at the southeastern tip of St. Tammany Parish, Slidell is bordered by bodies of water such as bayous and rivers. It all began with the construction of a railroad from New Orleans to Meridian, Mississippi in 1882. The camp for the railroad construction was set up into what subsequently became the city of Slidell. Roads were soon built and named after those who were behind the operation. Erlanger Street was for Baron Frederick Erlanger who was head of the bank that financed the project, and the town was called Slidell after John Slidell, a prominent political figure who ironically was said to have never even been to the town.
To this day, you can still follow the tracks of the 19th century railroad by cycling or going for a walk on the Tammany Trace which extends almost 31 miles from Slidell to Covington.
Since the completion of the railway, the town continued to experience rapid growth, first producing bricks and lumber in the 1910s then giving homes to those who didn't want to stay in New Orleans.
