Covington LA Homes

A City of Continuous Growth

Where the Tchefuncte River and the Bogue Falaya meet, one finds Covington, the parish seat of St. Tammany Parish. With a total area of 6.9 square miles, only about 8,500 people live in Covington, LA homes. This city between two rivers and covered with vegetation was first settled in by Jacques Dreux in 1880 but it wasn't until 1813 that a town was established here. Initially called Wharton, for the man who set up the town, the city was renamed after war hero, General Leonard Covington.

As Covington is found by two important waterways, commerce grew. And with the construction of the railroad in the 1880s the city continued to prosper. Soon enough, the population started rising, specially towards the later part of the 20th century when people working across the lake in New Orleans chose to live in Covington rather than the Big Easy. The two were not far from each other, hence living in Covington was a convenient commute to New Orleans and provided those who chose to settle here with a more affordable living option. The ox lots that made up this city soon began to evolve into homes, shops, boutiques, and schools that pretty much compose the Covington of today.

After Hurricane Katrina struck, Covington opened its arms and welcomed those who lost their homes, specifically those from St. Bernard Parish. This just goes to show that the famous southern hospitality is most definitely alive in Covington as well as the strength and resilience of its people.
